A mounted ventilated façade is one of the most advanced and popular technologies of external facing of facades. Such facades represent various types and complexity structures mounted into the main (bearing) wall on which coating (facing) elements are mounted (natural stone or ceramic granite slabs, glass, various polymers and composite materials). External façade facing slab fulfills a decorative role and protects from precipitations and mechanical impacts. Moisture contained in the building mass and inside the premises is extracted into a ventilated area. Thus, heat losses in heat insulation material are minimized. The heat insulation material covers unsatisfactory joints of the building and provides for uninterrupted conservation of heat along the total area of a façade. In summer, thermal protection with the help of ventilation protects walls from thermal load and provides comfort inside the building. For mounting of ceramic granite on external surface of the building wall, special hanging systems are installed.

Facing structures allow leveling of dimensional discrepancies and irregularities on walls and also covering of cracks. Air space provides for ventilation preventing accumulation of heat and moisture, allows runoff of precipitation coming into backside of the facing. Heat insulation material remains dry.

Ventilated facades are perfectly conjugated with roof, plinth, window and stained-glass windows through special standard junctions. Hanging systems are regularly improved with the purpose of their adaptation to architectural conditions.

Functions of ventilated facades
The major functions of ventilated facades may be described as follows:

1. Protection.
Water vapors contained in the air penetrate into the wall structure and, cooling down to the temperature below dew point, are condensed. Moister is accumulated in material pores and under minus temperatures freezes and, deforms its structure while expanding, which is accompanied by cracking and subsequent destruction of wall material. In mounted façade systems, exposure-resistant materials are used for facing.

2. Heat insulation.
Since heat insulation material is laid under the facing, such houses are turned into a peculiar kind of thermos. For instance, when heating is switched off in winter, they cool down 56 times slower than their non-insulated neighbors. And in summer they maintain coolness inside the building allowing significant saving on air-conditioning.

3. Sound proofing.
Mounted systems increase sound-insulation values of main walls by 1.5  2 times on average. Especially actual this function is becoming in cities, and in combination with glass-packages on windows, ventilated facades can provide for internal silence in a building even in a very noise areas (railway stations, airports etc.).

4. Damp-proofing.
Mounted facing plays a great role in maintaining the balance of water vapors circulating through the building walls. According to standards, air space under the facing must be gapless, without bypasses. When such standards are met, there appears a vertical air draught, like draught in a chimney-breast. Diffusion of water vapor through the building walls occurs in the direction of dew point: from high temperature to low. That is, if temperature inside the building is lower than outside the building, vapor will strive inside, and vice-versa. This diffusion causes the maximum harm to the walls in winter periods. In winter, temperature inside buildings is not lower than +20° С, and outside the building it is often below -30°. Even when split-systems removing excessive moisture from the air operate in the building, the difference in temperatures makes the residual water vapors leak out. However, they are quickly cooled down there and are frozen finally. If freezing occurs under the heat insulation material or inside its mass, then in the first case accelerated destruction of walls occur and in the second case  destruction of the insulation material. Air draught under the facing of mounted façade withdraws the major part of vapor from the external surface of main walls. This results in considerable extension of their service lives without repairs. However, it is necessary to remember that thickness of air space 4060 mm is calculated individually for each building with account to properties of main walls material, heat insulation, facing elements and many other factors. Only in this case walls and facing will serve for the period guaranteed.

Advantages of ventilated facades

Advantages of ventilated facades result from their main functions.

Profile system of mounted ventilated facades allows use of different dimensions ceramic granite for walls facing and depending on requirements to the façade. The structure of the bearing profile is designed in such a manner that all moisture on the façade surface is withdrawn to drainage excluding the contact with heat insulation material and building wall.

Water vapors appearing in building walls in the process of its operation are removed by natural ventilation provide by the system of mounted facades, thus significantly improving the thermal insulation properties of walls and providing comfortable temperature modes inside the building.

Combined use of a mounted façade and a heat insulation material is an excellent sound-proofing, since ceramic granite and the heat insulation material have sound absorbent properties in a wide range of frequencies.

Mounted façade systems include materials and items related to the category of fire-resisting or incombustible, impeding flame spreading.

The external screen has definite functions: it protects the heat insulation layer located behind it from weather impacts, and in summer, reflects considerable part of sun rays falling upon it which prevents the building from overheating.

A bearing outside wall does not usually require any special treatment for installing of ventilated structures on it. Besides, there is no necessity to lay plaster on the wall.

When restoring old buildings for which movement of moisture from inside to outside is typical, the use of ventilated facades excludes the necessity to use plaster.

Ventilated facades lined with ceramic granite may be easily repaired, by quick and easy replacement of slabs.

Possibility of performing façade works in any season. When lining a ventilated façade with ceramic granite, homogeneous color solution is achieved for the building façade, when using natural stone, this is impossible to achieve since natural stone is not homogenous. At the same time, thanks to color diversity of ceramic granite any design solution for façade is possible. Ventilated facades lined with ceramic granite are durable and do not need maintenance which significantly reduces budget for building maintenance.

Basing on the above-said, one can make a conclusion that the area of application of mounted ventilated facades is quite wide. They are used for construction and restoration of living, administrative, public and production buildings. Constructions of mounted ventilated facades allow solving effectively the tasks of energy saving, and the presence of large quantity of materials with various colors and textures used for making external lining layer which allows considerable improvement of architectural qualities of buildings.
